Gone are the days where having a website guaranteed new clients.

The combination of various factors attribute to your website’s decreased visibility.

Fresh content

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Saturation

While these terms may seem “Greek” to most small business owners, once explained they are really quite simple to comprehend.

To understand, you must first have an idea of the basic concept of how customers find your company on the internet. One of these methods is called Direct Traffic. This is where one of your customers enters your website into the address bar of their browser.

A web browser is a software application for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web. An information resource is identified by a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) and may be a web page, image, video, or other piece of content. Hyperlinks present in resources enable users to easily navigate their browsers to related resources. Wikipedia
Common Browsers – Microsoft Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Opera, Blackberry

A second method of web site traffic is Referring Sites. A good example, is any internet Yellow Page site. A customer will search for your company and will be directed back to your website via a link.
And the third most common way is via the search engines, Organic. This method by far has the greatest potential for new clients. The 5 biggest search engines are (listed by percentage of users): Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ask, & AOL.

To rank highly on these sites, a website must be optimized. Optimization in a nutshell, is the process of catering your web pages’s information for it to be found vial the search terms commonly used by your audience (clients).
Books are written on just this topic alone. Let me give you a quick example. If you were selling “spark plugs”, a web page devoted to spark plugs would have to compete with all the major brands – Bosch, Champion, AC Delco, etc. That is only the beginning! Add to that, all of the major auto parts stores – Napa, Kraegen, Pep Boys, etc. The likelihood that your website will be on page one of the search engines is ZERO!
On the other hand, if you had a page that discussed the benefits of “Bosch BMW Spark Plugs” your chances of ranking increase. Taken one step further, what if you had a page listing all of your brands and wrote specifically about “Spark Plugs in Reno Nevada”? A number one page ranking for consumers looking to purchase a spark plug in Reno, NV would now be within reach. (This practice of targeting longer phrases to drive traffic is commonly referred to Longtail Marketing)

Search Engine Optimization allows your potential clients to find you.

Another factor that has been responsible for decreased traffic to your website is saturation. The percentage of your competitors with websites has been exponentially increasing. Added to this is the number of competitors who were once called associates. Many companies struggling to survive have added services and products that were once outsourced to companies like your own.

Critical Things You Must Do To Generate Traffic To Your Website

Provide Fresh Content - Every time you update your website, the search engines have a reason to come back and visit. With increased visits, you will have more pages from your website listed on the search engines. Quick question, how likely will your website be found if you are only listed once for a given search term? Versus, having 10 or more pages for an equivalent search?
Contractors and other small businesses that work with a consistent flow of new clients have an easy means of adding multiple pages for a given search. This is accomplished by blogging or discussing a completed job in one or two paragraphs. You can read more about this tactic in the article WordPress Revolution for Small Business Owners.
To emphasize my point, let’s just say you bought a brand new home. You move in and do nothing! The landscape quickly overgrows, the dirt and debris accumulate and very quickly your new home looks like manure.
Are you expecting different results with your website?

Authority - To gain the status of an authority in any market, there must be others willing to recommend and promote your products and services. Newspaper articles, television appearances, referrals and the likes, help establish you and/or your company as an authority.
In today’s market we can not overlook the authority given by user review (Yelp, Angies List, Google reviews, etc.) and social media site (MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) Take a moment to look at any local search business listing on Google. Those companies with the most user reviews, consistently rank the highest (are displayed at the top of the list.)

Get your site listed!

When working with clients, I have found many to have a pretty website that is showing up on one of the major search engines, but not the others. What about all of those other potential clients that aren’t using the search engine that your website is listed?

And that is just a start! You need to have your company listed in not just the search engines, but social media sites, internet yellow directories, business directories, and with mobile search GPS and local directories.

Why is this important? Imagine for a moment, you have a stunning billboard offering a $100 dollars to anyone that calls. You’d be overwhelmed with phone calls! But is that really true? What if your billboard was on some dusty one lane road in the middle of the Arizona desert?

Same scenario, you now have 50 of the same billboards in all 50 of the top cities in the US (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, …) What do you think your phone traffic will be like now?

Listing your company and website in multiple locations in the internet is like having those 50 billboards!
The downside, is this can be time consuming and expensive to accomplish. I know too well the time it takes to just list in one directory. For me, it takes about 5 minutes per site. And I have all the tools to get it done quickly via copy and paste, etc.

Good news, you can accomplish this yourself with patience and time. Or you can have our construction marketing agency do the work for you for an incredibly low price.
Enough of the self promotion…

Let’s recap: Your website’s traffic is constantly being eroded by increased number of competitors (Saturation)
More importantly, smarter competitors who understand the value and necessity of a holistic approach to on and off line marketing.

3 of the most important things you can do to ensure your website is being found by your potential clients

Update your site often

Capture reviews from your clients

List your website in as many quality locations as possible
WARNING: If you are selling water heaters, listing your site on a kitchen gadget sales page, won’t get you noticed BUT it will hurt you.

Some of you many of heard of the term SEO or Search Engine Optimization. In a nutshell, this is a process used by website designers to insure your website ranks highly with the search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing and others). Most consumers find your company on the internet not by entering your company’s domain, but through the search engines.

With so many of your competitors rapidly adopting the internet as a key marketing strategy for their companies, it is vitally important that you take the steps to optimize your website. Some minor tweaks will provide dramatic results.

One easy way of checking the quality of your links with Google, for example is to enter the search term “site:www.yourdomain.com” in Google’s search box. Below is an example for the website CandRPoolPlastering.com (remember to replace “yourdomain.com” with the name of your company’s website.

The results of your search will provide an indication how well your website is currently optimized. This is a good starting point to understanding how websites are indexed by the search engines. Note: I am using Google to provide the results for this example. Google is the number one search engine followed by Yahoo and Bing (formerly MSN). These search engines account for 93% of searches – comScore July 2009 U.S. Search Engine Rankings.

Let’s dig in…

Number of pages that are currently indexed by Google. A golden rule when it comes to websites is Content Is King! The fewer number of pages on your website, the fewer the chances are you will be found.

Title of the webpage. Do your titles include keywords? At the very least, you should have your location in the title of your website’s home page.

Description of the page. I can’t tell you how many times contractors fail to have unique descriptions for the pages on their websites. Worse, the descriptions are totally meaningless.

With this information, you can quickly tell if your website is marginally optimized for the search engines. If not, here are

3 Easy Steps To Better Search Engine Rankings

These simple steps, will help in getting your website better rankings. This is only a start!

Insure all of your web pages have unique titles,

include a primary keyword in your titles (what you do i.e., “pool plastering”, etc. or location i.e., “Roseville, CA)

Add unique descriptions to all of your web pages – Use your primary keyword or phrase in the beginning of the title.

If you have designed your own web site, this will be done in the website building software. Otherwise, contact your website’s designer.

Here is a checklist for Search Engine Optimization. Thanks to the folks at Slashdot.org

Keywords in <title> tag

This is one of the most important places to have a keyword because what is written inside the <title> tag shows in search results as your page title. The title tag must be short (6 or 7 words at most) and the the keyword must be near the beginning.

Keywords in URLs help a lot – e.g. - http://yoursite.com/seo-services.html, where “SEO services” is the keyword phrase you attempt to rank well for. But if you don’t have the keywords in other parts of the document, don’t rely on having them in the URL.

3

Keyword density in document text

Another very important factor you need to check. 3-7 % for major keywords is best, 1-2 for minor. Keyword density of over 10% is suspicious and looks more like keyword stuffing, than a naturally written text.

+3

Keywords

Also very important, especially for the anchor text of inbound links, because if you have the keyword in the anchor text in a link from another site, this is regarded as getting a vote from this site not only about your site in general, but about the keyword in particular.

Keywords in headings (<H1>, <H2>, etc. tags)

One more place where keywords count a lot. But beware that your page has actual text about the particular keyword.

6

Keywords in the beginning of a document

Also counts, though not as much as anchor text, title tag or headings. However, have in mind that the beginning of a document does not necessarily mean the first paragraph – for instance if you use tables, the first paragraph of text might be in the second half of the table.

+2

7

Keywords in <alt> tags

Spiders don’t read images but they do read their textual descriptions in the <alt> tag, so if you have images on your page, fill in the <alt> tag with some keywords about them.

+2

8

Keywords in metatags

Less and less important, especially for Google. Yahoo! and Bing still rely on them, so if you are optimizing for Yahoo! or Bing, fill these tags properly. In any case, filling these tags properly will not hurt, so do it.

+1

9

Keyword proximity

Keyword proximity measures how close in the text the keywords are. It is best if they are immediately one after the other (e.g. “dog food”), with no other words between them. For instance, if you have “dog” in the first paragraph and “food” in the third paragraph, this also counts but not as much as having the phrase “dog food” without any other words in between. Keyword proximity is applicable for keyword phrases that consist of 2 or more words.

+1

10

Keyword phrases

In addition to keywords, you can optimize for keyword phrases that consist of several words – e.g. “SEO services”. It is best when the keyword phrases you optimize for are popular ones, so you can get a lot of exact matches of the search string but sometimes it makes sense to optimize for 2 or 3 separate keywords (“SEO” and “services”) than for one phrase that might occasionally get an exact match.

+1

11

Secondary keywords

Optimizing for secondary keywords can be a golden mine because when everybody else is optimizing for the most popular keywords, there will be less competition (and probably more hits) for pages that are optimized for the minor words. For instance, “real estate new jersey” might have thousand times less hits than “real estate” only but if you are operating in New Jersey, you will get less but considerably better targeted traffic.

+1

12

Keyword stemming

For English this is not so much of a factor because words that stem from the same root (e.g. dog, dogs, doggy, etc.) are considered related and if you have “dog” on your page, you will get hits for “dogs” and “doggy”

as well, but for other languages keywords stemming could be an issue because different words that stem from the same root are considered as not related and you might need to optimize for all of them.

+1

13

Synonyms

Optimizing for synonyms of the target keywords, in addition to the main keywords. This is good for sites in English, for which search engines are smart enough to use synonyms as well, when ranking sites but for many other languages synonyms are not taken into account, when calculating rankings and relevancy.

+1

So what is a sitemap and how do you submit it to the search engines?

A site map (or sitemap) is a list of pages of a web site accessible to crawlers or users. It can be either a document in any form used as a planning tool for web design, or a web page that lists the pages on aweb site, typically organized in hierarchical fashion. This helps visitors and search engine bots find pages on the site. – Wikipedia

Site maps can improve search engine optimization of a site by making sure that all the pages can be found. This is an important point. 70% of all contractor websites do not utilize this simple strategy! I say this from experience working with a large number of contractors who have either built their own websites or who have had companies build them in the past.

So how can you take advantage of having a sitemap on your website?

5 Simple Steps to Submitting a Sitemap

Get a Google username. If you aren’t already signed up for Gmail, I would strongly suggest you do so now. Having a Gmail account allows access not only to their email program, but a whole plethora of web services such as, Google Analytics, Webmaster Tools, AdSence, Google Local, etc. You can sign up for your Gmail account here.

Create a sitemap. This is as easy as going to XML-Sitemaps.com Entering your website address in the form, downloading the generated sitemap and uploading it to your web server or website hosting account.

Submit your sitemap to Google. With your Google username and password, log on to Google’s Webmaster Tools and add your site. During the process, you will be asked to enter the location of your sitemap usually it will be something like “http://www.yoursite.com/sitemap.xml” (replace yoursite.com with your website’s address)

Submit to Yahoo - Yahoo Site Explorer works on the similar lines as that of Google Webmasters Tool. Sign up, add a site, verify your website & add your sitemap as a feed. Hereby, Yahoo’s searchbot can have access to your sitemap.xml file.
Visit Yahoo Site Explorer at http://www.siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com

Ping the Search Engines – Copy and paste the following URL’s and remember to change the YourSite.com to your website’s address.

Ping Google – http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/ping?sitemap=http://www.YourSite.com/sitemap.xml

Ping Yahoo – http://search.yahooapis.com/SiteExplorerService/V1/updateNotification appid=YahooDemo&url=http://www.YourSite.com/sitemap.xml

Ping Bing – http://www.bing.com/webmaster/ping.aspx?sitemap=www.YourSite.com/sitemap.xml

Ping Ask – http://submissions.ask.com/ping?sitemap=http://www.YourSite.com/sitemap.xml

Ping Moreover – http://api.moreover.com/ping?u=http://www.YourSite.com/feed.xml

How many of you setup a single password for all of your logins?

And have you ever considered what would happen to your personal information if someone were to get their hands on it?

Everyday we hear nightmare stories of Stolen Identities. One way to avoid becoming the next statistic is to use unique passwords for the websites you visit. Below is one of the many ways to make passwords unique and secure. And all the while, easy to remember.

Passwords should be at the minimum a combination of numbers and letters.

The ideal password would also combine the numbers and letters with symbols.

Passwords should be a minimum of 6 characters long. The ideal length of passwords should be 8 – 10 characters.

You should use a combination of capitalized and non-capitalized letters in your password.

So how are you going to devise a password that does all of the above and still be memorable? Here is a simple strategy.

Capitalize the third letter of a password.

If symbols are allowed, some websites may not allow symbols, convert the vowels to a symbol:a = @, e = 3, i = 1, o = 0, u = ^

Start you password with two numbers, if symbols are allowed you can use the equivalent symbol for the numbers(i.e., 1 =! , 2 = @, 3 = #, etc.).

Examples:

For the website: HomeDepot.com

Pick two favorite two digit numbers. For this example my numbers are 45 & 87.

My symbol combinations for my favorite numbers are: $% and *& respectively.

Example #1 – 8 character password

$%h0M3d3 This password uses symbols, numbers and capitalization. The password is difficult to guess and hard to crack. But if you are consistent with your personal password rules, it will be very easy for you to remember.

Example #2 – 8 character password, no symbols

45h0M3d3 This password should only be used when symbols are not allowed. It is always best to include a symbol. Please note, all the same rules applied without the symbols.

Example #3 – 13 character password

$%h0M3d3p0t*& This password uses symbols, numbers and capitalization. The password is difficult to guess and hard to crack. But if you are consistent with your personal password rules, it will be very easy for you to remember.

In this example, we used both of our favorite number combinations as symbols.

Last Example: 8 character password, symbols and a very short domain(website name):

For the website: Go.com

This provides us with a variation using all of the rules we learned before. For an eight character password, we have to juggle somethings up.

$%g0.C0m Instead of using just the domain name, we also included the suffix of “.com” by using the same rules. When used in combination, all of these passwords are considered to be very strong and hard to guess.

Microsoft.com Has a wonderful article about Strong passwords: How to create and use them you can read this by clicking here.

While there are many different strategies commonly used in customizing passwords, I have found this to be the easiest to remember for multiple websites. Another great way of managing passwords is to use a software based program. There are many available for both PC’s and Mac’s. A Google search using the phrase of “password manager mac” or “password manager pc” will provide you with an abundant list of alternatives.
